CHAPTER 15

Iwoke to warmth pressed against me.

For a moment, I stayed still, caught between sleep and waking, wrapped in a haze of soft breathing and steady heartbeats.

Then my brain caught up.

My head was tucked against Kai's chest. One of his arms rested loosely around my shoulders. His fingers curled against my jacket like he had fallen asleep holding on.

I froze.

Slowly, carefully, I peeled myself away from him, my movements stiff and awkward. I sat up, pretending like nothing had happened, like my heart wasn't thudding loud enough to wake the dead.

Kai stirred, his eyes cracking open. His mouth curved into a slow, lazy smile.

"Morning," he said.

I pulled my jacket tighter around me, focusing very hard on the dying embers of the fire instead of the smirk spreading across his face.

"Morning," I muttered. "You snore, by the way."

Kai's smile widened. "You drool."

"I do not."

"You do," he said, sitting up and stretching his arms over his head. His shirt rode up, exposing his well-defined abs. I looked away fast, the heat crawling up my neck.

"You're imagining things," I said.

"Sure I am," Kai said.

I stood up, brushing imaginary dust off my pants. "We should get started. Training. Work. Responsibilities. Real life."

Kai pushed to his feet with easy grace, like the night hadn't affected him at all.

"Whatever you say, Stormwell," he said. But there was something else behind his eyes. A gleam. A weight. Like he wasn't going to forget how the night had ended.

And worse, like he knew I wasn't going to forget it either.

I grabbed my shoes from near the door and jammed them on harder than necessary.

Kai leaned against the wall, watching me with that same irritating, knowing look.

I straightened, brushing my hair back from my face. "Let's go. I'm ready."

He didn't move.

Instead, he crossed his arms and tilted his head, a lazy smile tugging at his mouth.

"You sure you're ready?" he asked.

I narrowed my eyes. "Yes."

"You're not still . . . emotionally compromised?" he said, drawing the words out like he was tasting them.

"I don't get emotionally compromised," I said, pulling my jacket tighter.

Kai's smile widened.

"Right," he said. "Because cuddling your trainer to sleep is a completely professional move."

I opened my mouth, closed it, and then pointed a finger at him. "That was exhaustion. Pure exhaustion. Nothing else."

"Sure," he said smoothly. "Exhaustion."

I glared at him, but it only made him look more smug.

"Are we going to train," I said through gritted teeth, "or are you just going to stand there and be annoying all morning?"

Kai pushed off the wall, stretching like he had all the time in the world.

"We can train," he said. "After you admit you drooled on me."

I stared at him. "You're insufferable."

"I know," he said, tossing me a wink. "You like it."

I growled under my breath and stormed toward the clearing behind the house, my shoes kicking up sand.

Behind me, I heard Kai's low laugh following me all the way there.
